Wrightwood Cabins – Your Home Away From Home

Wrightwood Cabins – Have you ever driven to a small town and wondered what in the world people living there do for  income?  Towns blessed in beauty and serenity but distanced from any economically viable activiities?  Wrightwood is just such a town — set in the San Gabriel mountains, away from smog and noise and commerce.  It’s size has kept relatively the same ever since I moved here in 1976, not something most towns can claim due to the suburban sprawl that has flowed from urban areas over the past 35 years.  The town’s constancy is due mostly to the fact that the town is surrounded by national forest, and cannot expand it boundaries.  If it could, I’m sure the boom would have hit here, too.  Fortunately for Wrightwood, it did not.

What has changed over the years is the ratio of vacation cabins in Wrightwood to permanent residences.  Wrightwood cabins in the 1970′s were largely used for vacationing, while today most of the cabins here are inhabited by full-time residents.  Hence the question “What do they possibly do for a living?”  The answer? The same things you do, only they commute.  For some, the commute to San Bernardino or Rancho Cucamonga takes little more time than for city dwellers who get stuck in downtown traffic jams.  But some people here commute up to 2 hours.

Why would anyone do that?  If you’ve stayed in Wrightwood cabins as a vacationer, you’d understand.  Wrightwood is like a another world…a tandem universe just beyond some mysterious veil.  Like going through the armoir to Narnia, once vacationers pass the “Welcome to Wrightwood” sign, the world around them transforms into a magical escape from the everyday, and sometimes, it’s just too hard to leave, or once they do, they wonder if they could possibly come back, only full-time.

For most, the commute, and transition away from convenience and opportunity, are just too difficult on a daily basis.  Instead, people take opportunities to visit Wrightwood whenever they can, discovering a second home in a Wrightwood cabin.  Finding a “home away from home” means finding a cabin to visit where the family feels comfortable, secure and can make great memories.  Whether playing games by the fire, walking in to town for shopping and dining, or sitting on the deck listening to the sounds of the forest, Red Apple Inn is just such a cabin…you’ll be glad you came and sorrowful to leave!
